The UAE parasite landscape

Many pet owners moving to the UAE assume the hot, dry climate means fewer parasites. The opposite is often true. Air-conditioned homes, irrigated gardens, and year-round warm temperatures create environments where fleas, ticks, and certain internal parasites thrive throughout the year — there's no real "off-season."

External parasites

Fleas

The most common parasite we see. Indoor environments with carpets, soft furnishings, and steady temperatures are perfect for the flea life cycle. We recommend year-round preventatives — most modern products are once-monthly spot-on treatments or oral medications.

Ticks

Ticks in the UAE can carry serious tick-borne diseases including ehrlichiosis and babesiosis, both of which can be life-threatening. After walks in vegetated areas, always check your dog thoroughly — particularly around the head, ears, and between toes.

Internal parasites

Intestinal worms

Roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, whipworms — all common in UAE pets. Regular deworming (every 3 months for adult pets, monthly for puppies and kittens) is essential. Some worms are zoonotic, meaning they can transfer to humans — particularly relevant for households with young children.

Heartworm

Heartworm, transmitted by mosquitoes, is a serious risk for dogs in the UAE. Prevention is straightforward; treatment if your dog becomes infected is long, expensive, and not always successful. Year-round prevention is strongly recommended.

• Monthly flea/tick prevention — year-round
• Quarterly broad-spectrum deworming — covering roundworms and tapeworms
• Monthly heartworm prevention for dogs — particularly those that spend time outdoors
• Annual faecal testing at the wellness exam to catch anything the preventatives miss

The cost of skipping it

Treating an established flea infestation, a tick-borne disease, or heartworm is dramatically more expensive than the cost of prevention — to say nothing of the suffering caused to your pet. A few hundred dirhams a year on consistent prevention is one of the best investments you can make.
